Unpopular Opinions Book Tag

Hey, friends! Today I’m doing the Unpopular Opinions Book Tag created by The Book Archer on YouTube. It seems kind of similar to the NOPE Book Tag that I did a few months ago, but I’m going to try picking different answers for this!

Spades Divider
Cover of Divergent by Veronica RothA popular book or series that you didn’t like

I could never get into Divergent when I tried it. Honestly, I barely remember what it was about or what I didn’t like about it. I think it ended up being one of those stories I wanted to like but just couldn’t get into. Besides, a girl in my class told me how the third book ends before I even finished the first one… I ended up never finishing the first book.

Cover of Sea Witch by Sarah HenningA book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love

A lot more people than I expected were disappointed by Sea Witch by Sarah Henning and I supposed I can understand why, but I loved it! It was everything I was hoping for and more. The twist at the end completely caught me off guard. I just loved revisiting the idea of The Little Mermaid which was my favorite Disney movie as a child and a story I’ve sought out several versions of. I can’t wait for the next book later this summer

Cover of The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina HenríquezA love triangle where the main character ended up with the person you didn’t want them to end up with or an OTP you don’t like

So a pairing that I HATE is Mayor and Maribel from The Book of Unknown Americans. That was last year’s One Book One Campus pick at my college and I hated those two together. The major plot of the story is that Maribel was in an accident that leaves her with a mental disability, and this causes her family to move to the US seeking the school with the best possible care for her. When they move into Mayor’s neighborhood, he becomes infatuated with her because she’s “beautiful despite being retarded.” He even says that he wants to learn how to communicate well with her so he can be the one person that ~truly understands her~. Like what? Get out of her with your toxic romanticism.

A popular book genre that you hardly reach for

Thriller and horror. I cannot do those genres, and on the rare occasion I do, they’re mild compared to others in the genre. I just— I have too much anxiety on my own without a book giving it to me.

A popular author that you can’t seem to get into

Nicola Yoon — I’ve read both of her books, but neither really grabbed me. I totally understand why they’re so popular, but they’re not for me. I doubt I’ll give any new books she writes a chance now, and honestly, I’m hesitant about David Yoon’s book. That’s her husband and he has a book called Frankly In Love, and it sounds good, but also… I don’t know if I’ll read it.

A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing

B U R Y   Y O U R   G A Y S

Cover of City of Bones by Cassandra ClareA popular series that you have no interest in reading

The Mortal Instruments and all of its spin-offs. There is just TOO much drama surrounding the fandom and the author. It’s been going on for so long that I feel like catching up would be painful. Besides, I’ve tried reading City of Bones twice and both times I hated it.

The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or T.V. show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

Surprisingly, I liked the movie for The Circle better than the book. It may have a bit to do with the fact that I had to read the book for class but the movie I saw because I wanted to. Still, I really liked the book when I read it, so much that I decided to see the adaptation in theaters. Not going to spoil anything, but I will say that the movie follows the book pretty faithfully until the end, where the conclusion is nearly opposite of that in the book, and honestly I enjoyed it more.
