Logo of a capital letter B with the spaces (counters) filled in. At the bottom of the shape, a spade is cut out. The fill of the shape is a rainbow gradient.
Spring 2023 - Typography (DART 301)

In my Typography for Web and Print class, we began by designing pieces featuring just a few letters and worked up to pieces featuring larger blocks of text with typographic hierarchies. My first major assignment was to create a personal logo using just one or two letters.

I choose to build off the concept I’d created with my blog Ace Of Bens, which led to the design of a capital B with a spade cut out of the bottom half in place of the counter. I’ve always had a preference for vibrant color palettes, and I had just discovered the freeform gradient tool on Adobe Illustrator. Since submitting this version of my logo for the assignment and having it featured in the end of semester showcase for La Salle University’s digital arts and communications departments, I’ve created many variations of this logo, mostly testing out different colors and textures.

The Creative Process

Moodboard graphic showing ten logos that caught my attention as being similar in some way to how I wanted my letter logo to look and feel. To the right of that are three typesheets displaying thick, bubble fonts. On the right edge of the graphic shows a palette of twelve colors.
The first phase of the assignment was to assemble a moodboard for inspiration. I knew I wanted something that was fun but professional with a captial B, and since I was already thinking of having the spade shap cut out, I knew I would need a thicker font. All of the images shown here are from Behance.
Graphic showing about twenty sketches of a capital letter B and spade shapes to show my brainstorming process from the creation of the letter logo.
Since I already had a concept in mind, I used this step to fine tune the style of the B and the spade. I also tested out a few related concepts.
Graphic showing sixteen artboards from the process of creating the letter logo. 1: The shape of the original letterform in solid black. 2: The shape of the original letterform in a rainbow gradient. 3: Sketches of shapes. 4: Logo in the shape of a capital B with the spaces, or counters, entirely filled in. At the bottom of the shape is the spade shape from the previous artboard cutout of the letterform. The fill of the shape is a different rainbow gradient than the previous artboard. All artboards that follow are the same shape in different colors. 5, 6, 7: The letter logo in different rainbow gradients. 8: The letter logo in solid white with a square, rainbow gradient background. 9: The letter logo in a blue gradient going from dark to light. 10: The letter logo in solid white with a square, blue gradient background. 11: The letter logo in solid white with a square, black background. 12: The letter logo in blue. 13: The letter logo in green. 14: The letter logo in yellow. 15: The letter logo in orange. 16: The letter logo in pink.
I got the shape/outline down quickly, then spent some time trying out different color schemes.
