This book is about Audrey who suffers from Social Anxiety Disorder. The story represents her anxiety in a lighthearted way but also in a realistic way too. Title: Girl In Pieces

Author: Kathleen Glasgow

Genre: Contemporary, Older Young Adult

Publication: Delacorte Press, 2016

Goodreads | Amazon

The book is about Charlotte who suffers from depression and self-harm. This book is so dark and disturbing to read at times, it represents Charlotte struggles in a very realistic way. This book is also own voices and the author has put her entire teenage self in it. We also go through Charlotte trying to recover from her mental illness. It is also hopeful (considering the amount of darkness it contains).

This book has some fantasy elements to it but also has the contemporary feel to it, considering its genre it was really nice mental illness represented in it. This book has two characters who deal with mental illness, The first is the main character Michael who deals with anxiety and OCD. Also Michael’s sister who deals with anorexia. This book represented both their illnesses in raw and realistic way. We also get to see Michael go to a therapist and that was one of the greatest part about the book.

Title: Turtles All The Way Down

Author: John Green

Genre: Contemporary, Young Adult

Publication: Dutton Books for Young Readers, 2017

Goodreads | Amazon

This book is very popular but I feel the need to recommend it because it’s so good. This book is about Aza who deals with OCD and anxiety, it is also own voices which always adds reality to the story. We follow Aza as she struggles with her mental illness and try to recover from it. One of the nice things about the book was Aza’s supportive mother and how she took care of her daughter through the rough times. Obviously, this book was raw, realistic and well done.

This book deals with many things, one of the main focuses of it is one of the main characters mental illness. We follow Matthew who deals with OCD. This book is kind of different than others because it represents his mental illness in a different way which was really unique. We also see Matthew trying very hard to get past his mental illness.
