Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday! I’m trying to start actually posting them on Tuesdays now, so this is new for me. This week, I’ve gathered some book titles that I really like for one reason or another, which I will explain. The official prompt is “Extraordinary book titles”, but I’m not sure “extraordinary” is necessarily the right word for all these titles. So it’s really a list of book titles I like.

1. Swipe Right For Murder by Derek Milman

Man, I can’t think of a better title for a YA thriller book in this generation. Or a better synopsis for a book, either. Like, this guy’s just trying to have a fun night with another guy and now he’s caught up in an FBI investigation? That’s gotta suck. I’d swipe right on this book. (And I will read it when I get a copy.)

2. How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming by Mike Brown

This is honestly a book I’ll probably never read, but I absolutely love this title. It’s a nonfiction book written by the astronomer that argued that Pluto isn’t a planet (so if you’re still mad, this is the man you can direct your anger to.)  When I first saw this book at my library I’m pretty sure I laughed out loud. The title still stands out to me two years later.

3. My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga

This title is a giant mood. The whole story was super relatable as someone who has struggled with mental illness, and the title is just perfect. “My heart and other black holes” captures the atmosphere of the book so well.

4. Stay Gold by Tobly McSmith

Someone really took the iconic “Stay gold, Ponyboy” line out from under S.E. Hinton and made it queer! After the whole “my characters are NOT gay and how DARE you suggest such” drama that ensued on Twitter! I love this so much, and I’m super excited about this book. I mean, come on. It’s a book called Stay Gold about a trans guy named Pony. Please add it to your TBR!

5. Anger is a Gift by Mark Oshiro

I haven’t read the entirety of this book, but the idea of anger being a gift is one I really like. There is a lot of poetry in the concept but you can also look at it from a practical perspective. If you don’t have negative emotions, the positive ones wouldn’t mean as much. Anger can lead to productiveness and progress if managed well. Maybe one day I’ll pick it up again when I have the emotional energy and see what else makes anger a gift.

6. We Unleash The Merciless Storm by Tehlor Kay Mejia

This book doesn’t come out until February and there won’t be any review copies, so I (unfortunately) haven’t read this one yet either. But this title just has me SO PUMPED for the sequel (as if I wasn’t already.) It definitely deserves a spot on any “extraordinary book titles” list because it just sounds so epic. Like, man I just want to see the storm. I want to see Carmen and Dani get the bad guys without mercy. I AM SO EXCITED!!

7. Knit One, Girl Two by Shira Glassman

What can I say? I love a good pun. It makes it sound like a really cute love story, and, from what I’ve heard, that’s exactly what it is. So A+ to the title-giver of this story.

(Side note: The illustrations on the cover are adorable and I love them.)

8. When I Was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago

I love the way this title captures Santiago’s experiences and summarizes the message here. This whole memoir is about her life being between two cultures and how she doesn’t feel like she fully belongs to either. I don’t really know the right adjectives to use about why I like this title, but I do. Also, I really enjoyed reading this book.

9. Unpregnant by Jenni Hendriks and Ted Caplan

Aside from the timely concept of a summer road trip and fighting for access to reproductive healthcare, the title of the book really drew me to it. Well, that and Jess @ The Book Bratz’s excitement for it at BookExpo. I mean, just having the word “pregnant” on a YA book in any form is kind of a win, don’t you think? We treat teenage pregnancy as such a huge taboo that we refuse to talk about it. But this book and its title bring it to your attention and I love that about it. One of the most extraordinary book titles.

10. Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert

Last but certainly not least is a November release I’m super excited for. The title is something that really gets your attention, and I love the attitude it gives off. Knowing it’s a bucket list story makes the “get a life” pun even better. Plus it’s somewhat ironic because I know a girl named Chloe Brown in real life and we spent a good deal of time comparing her to what the synopsis tells us about the fictional Chloe Brown.
