TIME TO FREAK OUT! I’ve read 24 books out of my goal of 52 this year which puts me two books behind, but gives me enough to answer these questions. So let’s get started with the Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag 2019
The best book you’ve read so far in 2019
On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden – OH my GOSH, this book was just perfect. I have a review coming very soon, because I need to scream about it in depth, but Walden’s art style is G O R G E O U S and the story is just as amazing and you all need to read it.
Your favorite sequel of the year
Cop out but Moonstruck, Vol. 2 by Grace Ellis and Shae Beagle, which is the only sequel I’ve read this year! I get so distracted between books when I read series, so I don’t read that many.
A new release that you haven’t read but really want to
Don’t Date Rosa Santos by Nina Moreno – This was on my list of most anticipated releases for the first half of the year, but it seems everyone has read this but me! I swear I will get to it this summer! I noticed they have the audiobook on Hoopla it might even be my next read.
Your biggest disappointment
The Witch Doesn’t Burn In This One by Amanda Lovelace – I was SO ready to join the hype for Lovelace’s work when I saw this was set as “Read Now” on NetGalley, but this book fell so flat for me. Maybe it simply wasn’t the type of poetry or sentiments or comfort I need in my life, but this book and I didn’t work out.
Biggest surprise of the year
Guts by Raina Telgemeier – I mean, I knew everyone likes her books but I’m very much the type of person to avoid the hype. So thank you to Tay for telling me to pick this on up at BookExpo. I went back to my Airbnb that night and read it in one sitting while texting Tay about how much I saw myself in the book!
Favorite new to you or debut author
I can’t name just one or else I’ll explode from the guilt of leaving some out so here’s a short list of favorites I’ve discovered in 2019: Casey McQuiston, Tillie Walden, Tehlor Kay Mejia, Raina Telgemeier, and Ngozi Ukazu!
New favorite character
Okay, so I first read it in the last week of 2018, but I recently reread it and I’ve decided Nax Hall is definitely my favorite character of all-time. So my answer is Nax from The Disasters by M.K. England.
A book that made you cry
Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston – I feel like it only happens once a year, maybe less, that a book makes me cry, so this is the book for 2019! I don’t know what to say about this book except READ IT! Please!
A book that made you happy
Dear gosh, I have read so many sad, tragic books this year. Please drop some fluffy stories in the comments for me. Mooncakes by Wendy Xu and Suzanne Walker was pretty light-hearted and I really liked it! The world its set in and the characters themselves are all wonderful, and I hope there’s more in the future. I’ll have a full review of it closer to its release date.
Your favorite book to movie adaptation that you’ve seen this year
Um, does saying Spider-Verse is an adaptation of the comics count? I haven’t seen a single book-to-movie adaptation this year! To be fair, I’ve only watched a total of three movies in all of 2019, so we’re essentially going to skip this prompt…
Favorite book post you’ve done this year
20BiTeen: Anticipating a Bi Year In Books – I haven’t updated it in a while, so I guess I should, but I still really love the list of 2019 book releases with bi rep that I made.
The most beautiful book you’ve bought/received this year
Honestly, The ARC I have of The Gravity of Us by Phil Stamper is really pretty and I can’t wait to see the finished copies, because I can only imagine what they’ll look like. Too bad we have to wait until February 2020 for the finals!
What are some books you need to read by the end of the year
All 48 books I brought home from BookExpo. My top three priorities are A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab (I really need to finish this series before more come out), The Fever King by Victoria Lee (because it’s being adapted into a comic on Webtoon!), and Wild Beauty by Anna-McLemore (because I need to be able to say I’ve read all of her books lol).
