Review: “love, & you” by Gretchen Gomez

Rating: ★★★★★

Synopsis: one day i met a guy
who stole my heart,
we created a world
for ourselves.
and another day
he broke my heart
and shattered
my soul.

i took the tattered
pieces of this
broken soul and
became anew.

– here lies the hurting, the healing, and the learning

(please be advised this book has mature content)

These poems are gorgeous, and I loved this collection! Admittedly, I don’t have much experience in reading and reviewing poetry. However, from what I understand, one of the major points of poetry is to express yourself and make the reader feel what you’re feeling. And boy did this book make me feel something!

Some of the poems Gomez writes in this collection are words that younger me needed to here more often, so the fact they’re written in a published book today is wonderful! I’m also so glad that there are poems like these out there for those who do find themselves in desperate situations such as a love that feels great sometimes but ultimately isn’t good for you.

While I’ve never experienced the type of abusive love that she talks about in many of these poems, the way she captures the emotion makes me feel like I have a better understanding of how it feels. Reading the narration of the healing process and words of self-encouragement near the end was beautiful because it’s what makes this collection a story of self-growth

Also, the language nerd in me loved the addition of the Spanish lines.

Final thought: Get a copy of this book and read Gretchen Gomez’s fantastic poetry. You won’t regret it!
